PAROLE CHE RESTANO NEL CUORE
October 1976: "DAVID AND I ARE VERY CLOSE. We've known each other for years. We met actually, eight - and - a half years (1968) ago in New York. We were both up for the talent program for Columbia - Screen Gems. Davey got in, and I didn't. Since then our paths have crossed, but we became like brothers on Starsky and Hutch. Very fortunate for both of us, WE HAVE A VERY SIMPATICO RELATIONSHIP, THE RIGHT CHEMISTRY. We both want to do a good job, we both want to communicate with each other. With those objectives you become very, very close. WE REALLY CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER." Paul Michael Glaser (Photoplay Film Monthly)
Circa 1977: "During the auditions for the part of Starsky, I read with dozens and dozens of actors. [...]I did some nice readings with some of these gentlemen, but the spark just wasn't there.
THEN IT WAS PAUL'S TURN. FROM THE MOMENT HE WALKED IN,SOMETHING HAPPENED. IT WAS ELECTRICAL. AS SOON AS WE STARTED READING TOGETHER THERE WAS A BUZZ, A CHEMISTRY. IT JUST CLICKED". David Soul (From an interview to a belgian magazine).
1977: "SINCE WE STARTED ON STARSKY AND HUTCH WE HAVE FORMED A VERY CLOSE BOND OF FRIENDSHIP". Paul Michael Glaser (Seventeen Magazine)
September 1977: Paul feels that the “personal chemistry” between himself and David Soul made the show a hit. “IT'S THE REAL CARING BETWEEN US THAT WORKS,” he explains, “Plus the humor and the action. It certainly isn't the writing or the quality of the photography.”
“I LOVE HIM,” says David Soul, “I RESPECT HIS TALENT AND HIS CRAFT, BUT IT'S VERY HARD TO PUT MY FINGER ON THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT HIM, AND HE HAS THE SAME FRUSTATION TRYING TO TALK ABOUT ME. I FEEL KIND OF PRIVATE WITH PAUL, EVEN ON THE SCREEN. WE UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER, WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL KIND OF COMMUNICATION, AND THAT'S THE JOY OF WORKING WITH HIM. I wouldn’t do Starsky & Hutch with another Starsky, that’s for sure.”
1970s: “DAVEY AND I ARE PROBABLY CLOSER FRIENDS THAN STARSKY AND HUTCH.” Paul Michael Glaser
December 1977: "Paul's probably my one real male friend these days. Part of it is because I don't really have much time for relationships with all this work, but part of' it is because I REALLY LOVE AND CARE ABOUT HIM A LOT." David Soul (Movie World)
December 1977 "David has taught me a lot! He's understanding, intelligent and a fabulous human being. He has his weaknesses but so do I. Frankly, I LOVE HIM. IT'S THE KIND OF RELATIONSHIP I'VE NEVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I find myself being jealous of him at times - and yet rooting for him to succeed more than anything. WHAT WE HAVE BETWEEN US IS A VERY SPECIAL CHEMISTRY, BOTH ON THE SET AND OFF IT." Paul Michael Glaser (Movie World)
December 1977 "PAUL AND I RESPECT AND CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER. IT'S A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP. THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR PAUL." David Soul
"I never had a brother and that's probably the best way I could explain how I feel about David right now. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DAVY AND ME IS REALLY SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY!" Paul Michael Glaser (Tiger Beat)
1992:"I'm so proud of this guy" David Soul (referring to Paul)(from "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee" Tv show)
1995: "I LOVE DAVEY." "He's a good boy, ya know.. He's a good boy..he's got a good heart..."Paul Michael Glaser
"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OUT OF STARSKY AND HUTCH FOR ME..aside from *all* the other good things...WAS THE RELATIONSHIP WITH PAUL...WICH IS STILL....THERE...."David Soul (From an inteview on the TNT Network)
1998: "Both of us were very skeptical about the business of television. We sat down and look at each other and said "WHATEVER HAPPENS OUT THERE IT'S ME AND THEE", SO IN A SENSE THE ME AND THEE OF STARSKY AND HUTCH WAS THE ME AND THEE OF DAVID AND PAUL" David Soul (Cult TV)
2002: "WE LOVED EACH OTHER. WE LOVE EACH OTHER." Paul Michael Glaser (from the TV show "Typisch")
March 5 2002: "I'M STILL CLOSE FRIEND WITH STARSKY, PAUL MICHAEL GLASER. [...] MIND YOU, THERE WHERE TIMES WHEN WE CORPSED HORRIBLY. ONCE, PAUL AND I HAD TO RE-SHOOT ONE SCENE 67 TIMES BECAUSE WE KEPT LOOKING AT EACH OTHER AND LAUGHING WHENEVER THE CAMERA WAS SWITCHED ON". David Soul (from an interview to "This is Local London")
2003:"It (S&H) just had all of these elements going and I think that energy was pretty valuable to the audience. You know, David and I would have moments where we really felt that we could connect as actors and as men and ah,.. that was very fulfilling." Paul Michael Glaser (from the interview for "Starsky & Hutch the first season" DVD)
March 8 2004: "The endurance of the show has to do with our characters' relationship," says Glaser, the original Starsky.
"Chemistry is something you can't go out and play," Soul adds.
"I first saw David in a showcase in New York," says Glaser, "[David] was a 6-foot-1, blond, good-looking guy - something I would never be. He was able to be cool and controlled. He could play the guitar and sing - something I wanted to do. He was at the other end of the spectrum".
"Paulie and I are chalk and cheese," agrees Soul."Our backgrounds are so different, but we're similar in our way of looking at things. I trusted him. It didn't take long. We didn't fight for lines. There was no b.s. going on between us. "Our relationship was very open and true. WE'RE STILL VERY CLOSE, WE'LL BE LIFE-LONG FRIENDS." New York Daily News
March 15 2004: "Paul and I are best friends" David Soul (An open letter to Channel 4)
